Yes So'ton is an abbreviation of Southampton, and yes, people sometimes call it So'ton. As for the band, it was probably the Vertigo Birds, although I was in a lot of bands for a while. Gig was possibly at The Railway Inn in Winchester or the Solent Suite(?) in So'ton.
Jane Pow were from Southampton (my hometown), as were Ambition Records. One of my old bands gigged with them a couple of times around 1990-91.
